This is the fun stuff. The purpose of a trial is to promote the versatility and working aspects of the Jack Russell Terrier. EJRTC has sponsored an annual trial since 1995 and is planning to have four in the year 2000. The first will be TUX and TAILS, a premiere event, on the weekend of March 25th and 26th in Scottsdale, Arizona. This will be a sanctioned trial. The second event will be a fun day, June 10, 2000 in Yorba Linda, California. The time and directions are below for this event. A sanctioned Trial will be held in California in September, 2000. The exact date, time and place to be announced. We are also planning a Fun Day open to all Jack Russell Terriers at Farr West Kennels in the Ogden area of Utah, in June of 2001. The exact date and time to be announced. If you would like to receive a trial booklet or more information, please call JoAnn Stoll at 909-763-4128 or e-mail us at Englishjrtc@cs.com

A trial is separated into three parts: Go to Ground; Racing; and Conformation.
GO-TO-GROUND:
This is a simulated hunting exercise to test the gaminess of the terriers. Long, narrow, tunnel-like three sided liners are provided with caged rats at the end. (Humane treatment of the rats is mandatory.) The terriers are judged on the way they work the quarry. They are timed from the start to see how quickly they "find" the quarry. Go to Ground is not a race and the object is for the terrier to follow the scent of the rat to the end of the tunnel. Once there, they are further timed from one to three minutes, depending on their level (novice or advanced) on how they "work" the quarry. They must be locked onto the quarry by digging, whining and barking or death-stare. At this point they are judged on their intensity to work the quarry and, by EJRTC trial rules, a death-stare is not sufficient to win Go-to-Ground. They are disqualified if they lose concentration on the quarry within the allotted time frame.
RACING:
This is a test of their speed and agility. The race course is 150 feet in length and the terriers chase a varmint tail down the course. The first terrier through the hole at the end wins the race. The terriers are muzzled and race six at a time. We do flat racing as well as over hurdles.
CONFORMATION and FUN CLASSES:
Conformation looks at the working structure of the terriers and is judged according to the EJRTC Breed Standard. Functional conformation is judged rather than perfect conformation. The terriers have to possess the attributes and gaminess required to be working terriers. It must be remembered perfect conformation is useless to a working terrier if the will to employ the hunting instinct is not present.
EJRTC also sponsors fun classes for the novice handlers and children, encouraging their participation. These include trick and costume classes which are loved by all.
Obedience and agility are also important parts of the trial. They encourage a trainable working terrier. Agility is a lot of fun for handler and terrier, alike, as the terriers maneuver over, under and through obstacles of all kinds.
Jack Russell Terriers are not foo-foo dogs, and our trials are not beauty contests. Since so many of the dogs we have today are not hunted as they once were, the trial gives them an opportunity to put to use the instincts and working traits for which they were bred. Come out and enjoy the day with us, whether you have a terrier or not.
